A member of the New South Wales Animal Justice Party and Member of Parliament, Emma Hurst puts animal welfare at the forefront of her political career.
For 15 years, Emma has campaigned for animal protection and has worked as the campaign director for Animal Liberation and as a media officer PETA. During her time as MP for NSW, she has launched and chaired an investigation into animal welfare legislation's failures and an inquiry into the use of battery cages in egg production, pushing for the unethical means of production to be phased out.
Emma's latest goal is harsher sentences laws for acts of animal cruelty. In her eyes, such acts should be classified as a form of domestic abuse. Emma also continues to fight against the use of animals for entertainment, looking to impose a statewide ban on the practice that sees exotic animals confined to small spaces and forced to carry out mindless tasks that provide little educational benefit. Emma is looking to push parliament to launch an inquiry into the cruel practice. She is a long-time vegan and plant-based athlete.
